Emotional Intelligence: Managing Self Awareness

In his book, ‘Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ,’ Daniel Goleman identified a framework of 5 elements which in his opinion define emotional intelligence.  These are:

  1. Self-Awareness
  2. Self-Regulation
  3. Motivation
  4. Empathy
  5. Social Skills

This article deals with the first of these, Self-Awareness.

Being self-aware is the foundation for personal growth and is the ability to know yourself and the effect your emotions have.    Becoming self-aware is the first step in making the changes you need to make if you want to change.

We all know who seem to be in control of their emotions, no matter how stressful or complex the situation they are in becomes.  They are always what we call level-headed.

They remain calm and seem to have the ability to view problems from various perspectives and angles as they assess the situation.  They are generally very good at making decisions and always trust their gut.

Tip For Today

Learn to recognize the triggers which cause your emotions to rule and manage them and their effect on you and those around you.
