A gentle word, a kind look, a good-natured smile
can work wonders and accomplish miracles.
Recently, while walking through a car park for an appointment with a client, I did what I very often do and that is smile and greet a person coming in the opposite direction. The response it got this time took me by surprise.
Generally, people will smile in return, with an accompanying mumbled greeting, but often I will get the old ‘hairy eyeball’ stare like I have just landed from another planet and spoken Alien! Occasionally people will look in the other direction and pretend I am not there, but that is fairly rare.
But the response I got on this occasion was fairly unique. He was, I estimate, in his late 30’s to early 40’s, casually dressed and seemingly in no particular hurry. He stopped, smiled, greeted me back and thanked me for making his day. We spoke briefly, during which he told me that his day so far had been rough, but now he felt better about himself and the day.
To say I was surprised is probably the understatement of the year. I was left amazed by the effect of a smile and a greeting.
I never got his name nor did he ask for mine, but the encounter has left a lasting impression on me and I would like to think on him too. As I walked on further to my client, there was a renewed spring in my step and a determination to continue having the type of attitude which positively influences people everyday.
So if I pass you while walking my dog or off to see a client and greet you with a smile, return it as it will encourage you and me.
I trust you have a great week.
